SELF: How to Clear a Stuffy Nose Fast—And Get Back to Breathing Normally (1)

If allergies are causing a stuffy nose, avoiding pollen and dust can help minimize discomfort, says Taylor Carle, MD, an ear, nose and throat specialist at Huntington Health, an affiliate of Cedars-Sinai. Photo by Getty.

SELF recently interviewed Taylor Carle, MD, an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist—also called an otolaryngologist—at Huntington Health, an affiliate of Cedars-Sinai, about ways to relieve nasal congestion caused by allergies, a cold, the flu or a sinus infection.

Carle told SELF that if allergies are causing a stuffy nose, limiting exposure to pollen and dust can help minimize discomfort.

“Simple methods, like using HEPA filters in your home, keeping your windows closed, vacuuming carpets and rugs often, and keeping pets out of your bedroom,” are all things that may be helpful, Carle said.

For colds, over-the-counter nasal sprays can provide relief, but Carle cautioned that sprays marketed as “decongestants” should be used only temporarily. Otherwise, they can cause what’s known as a “rebound effect” and worsen congestion.

“Decongestant nasal sprays are intended for use for two to three days during a cold, but not for long-term use,” Carle said.

She told SELF that when it comes to breathing better while sleeping, certain positions are better than others.

“The nasal cavity has a high density of blood vessels, and thus, nasal congestion is highly dependent on the position of the head,” Carle said. “Keeping the head elevated above the level of the heart can help minimize the amount of blood that pools in the nasal tissues, causing congestion.”

Other ways to help clear the nasal passages and provide relief include taking a hot shower, using a humidifier, or breathing in the steam of a hot cup of water or tea.
